What Is Bipolar?

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings. People with bipolar disorder experience periods of intense emotional highs (mania) where they have increased energy, racing thoughts, impulsivity, and a decreased need for sleep. These manic episodes are often followed by periods of deep sadness, hopelessness, and low energy (depression). The shifts between these mood states can be severe and often disrupt life, affecting relationships, work, and everyday tasks.

Types Of Bipolar Disorder

There are different types of bipolar disorder, including:

  • Bipolar I Disorder causes at least one manic episode that lasts for a week or longer. The episode can cause an intense bursts of energy, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and a decreased need for sleep. Manic episodes are often followed by periods of depression, which trigger feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and low energy,

  •  Bipolar II Disorder triggers both depressive and hypomanic episodes. Hypomania is similar to mania but is less severe and does not lead to severe impairment or require hospitalization. Depressive episodes in bipolar II disorder are similar to those in bipolar I disorder.

  • Cyclothymic Disorder causes chronic mood fluctuations between hypomania and mild depression, lasting for at least two years. The mood shifts are less severe than in bipolar I or II disorders, but they are chronic and persistent. The cycling between moods is often more rapid than in other types of bipolar disorder.

Myth 9: People with Bipolar Disorder are Unstable or Dangerous

Fact: People with bipolar disorder are not inherently unstable or dangerous. With the right treatment and support, most individuals can effectively manage their symptoms and behaviors.

Myth 10: Only Medication Can Trigger Stability

Fact: Medication is a common treatment approach, but stability can also be achieved through therapy, stress management techniques, healthy lifestyle choices, and a strong support network.

Myth 11: Children Can't Have Bipolar Disorder
